Business Headshots are needed for all types of professional situations: websites, LinkedIn, real estate business cards, casting, and more.
Whatever your use, it is an essential part of a professional’s job. Here are a few tips to help you have a great session.

General Tips

• Tell us your expectations and intentions. Let us know what kind of look you want
• Tell us how and where the photo will be used (so we can be sure it’s appropriate)
• Drink lots of water and be well rested (so your eyes will not have dark circles)
• Your skin might not look it’s best after alcohol use. Try to abstain from these before your shoot

What to Wear – Everyone

• Wear clothes that are comfortable and that make you look great
• Make sure your jacket and shirt fit you well. A poor fitting jacket or shirt will be obvious in the photos (especially around the neck)
• Don’t overdress
• Turtlenecks are almost always a bad idea (since they crowd the face)
• Clothes should be neatly pressed and should look new or like new
• Avoid busy patterns and large lines/stripes
• Blue/green/turquoise shirts/blouses or accents can help emphasize blue/green/hazel eyes

What to Wear – Men

• The standard business look is a suit jacket, dress shirt and tie
• A casual business look is often a jacket and open dress shirt, shirt and tie (no jacket), or dress shirt on it’s own
• Polo shirts are a good look for some businesses. Be sure the shirt is in good condition and fits well
• For a no-jacket casual look, bring colored shirts – ideally darker than your skin tone
• A white dress shirt by itself is a bad idea – unless you plan to wear it underneath something (jacket or sweater)
• Bring a few different jackets, shirt colors and ties so we have choices for the photos

What to Wear – Women

• Avoid big prints and busy patterns
• Different necklines will change the apparent shape of your face. Bring a variety different shirts/blouses to see what works best
• For a no-jacket casual look, bring various colored blouses – ideally darker than your skin tone
• Be stylish and fashionable, but remember the picture is about your face and not your clothes or jewelry
• Sleeveless tops/dresses can draw attention to your shoulders/arms. Consider bringing items with a variety of different sleeves

Remember: Select and wear clothes that make you feel comfortable. Select something that makes you look and feel good.

Jewelry

• Keep jewelry extremely simple – small is better
• Avoid jewelry that would distract from your face or that looks dated
• The picture is about your face, not your jewelry
• Consider if facial piercings or multiple ear piercings are appropriate for where your photo will be displayed

What to Bring

• Various changes of clothing (see above)
• A good attitude!
• Lip balm
• Hair brush/comb
• Makeup and hair products you prefer (especially if you have allergies)

Hair and Makeup Tips

• Make-up should be clean and natural
• Wear a heavy layer of translucent powder – your face will appear flawless in photos. Shine disappears, pores seem smaller, skin looks even, and blush is smoother
• Line lips before applying matte lipstick, then reline. Don’t overdo it. Dip a cotton bud in powder and run along lip line to prevent color from bleeding
• Avoid shimmers or products with lots of sparkle or shine
• Avoid frosts or overly-bright colors
• Don’t get a new hair cut just before the shoot (you may want to let it grow-in a bit or get used to styling a new cut)
• Do not try/use any new product on your hair, face or body the day before or few days before your shoot. In case you have a bad reaction to the product

Please Arrive With

• Hair styled and makeup already applied (if not using makeup artist)

Business headshots have many uses, so it is important for most people to have one.  A proper headshot announces your presence as a professional, and frames your image in the best and most advantageous light.  Headshots are used for websites, business cards, LinkedIn profiles, advertising, and more.  Therefore, in a competitive market, a job seeker with a good headshot will have the edge over his or her peers.

A LinkedIn headshot is a great way to make your profile look professional.

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network. If you’re not on it, you’re missing out. And if you don’t have a good profile photo, you’re still missing out.

Why your headshot needs an update.

If you don’t have a good headshot, then you’re not leaving a good first impression with potential clients, business partners, employers, employees, etc. These people need to know that you are three things: friendly, trustworthy, and professional. What better way to demonstrate that then through an amazing profile photo? It doesn’t matter what you write in your profile, no one is going to take you seriously if your photo is amateur.

So what makes a good headshot? I’m glad you asked! Whether you take your headshot yourself or get it done professionally. It’s important to take these things into consideration:

Background

The background of your headshot photo matters. Colored and patterned backgrounds can be distracting. Go for a clean and simple white or grey. Black is okay too but sometimes I find it to be harsh. You just don’t want to distract from what really matters here, YOU.

The headshot: it’s an absolute business necessity when you’re in the real estate industry. Your headshot is part of your personal branding, and people expect to see it everywhere – on business cards, your website, public benches and even billboards! Real estate is a face-to-face business and potential clients want to see yours.

Do of Real Estate Headshots

Update your photo every few years. It’s important to keep your headshot current, especially now that so many people begin their real estate searches on the internet. You want your online prospects to recognize you when you finally meet them.

Have a cropped version of your headshot that you can use on social networking sites. Cropping also allows you to almost completely eliminate any backgrounds or styling choices that appear dated.

Choose a setting that works with your branding. If you sell beachfront properties, having a tasteful seaside view in the background will reinforce your area of expertise. High-end residential homes? Try a lush garden location. Or, if al fresco photography isn’t your thing, consider a casual office setting or classic solid backdrop.

Wear something that you feel comfortable in. If you’re not a suit person, don’t wear a suit! Your awkwardness will come through in the photo.

On a related note, wear something with sleeves. No one wants to look topless in their professional headshot… not in this profession anyway.

Don’ts of Real Estate Headshots

Use props. Telephones, sold signs, glasses of wine, we’ve seen it all! Nothing says silly and unprofessional faster than an agent that feels like he/she needs to use a prop to catch your eye.

Abuse Photoshop. Of course you can use it for light touch-ups, but proceed with caution. If you find yourself with a completely new hairline, blurry hair halo or blindingly white teeth, you’ve gone too far.

Strike a pose. You are not Madonna, nor are you a stage actor. Potential clients respond best to approachable headshots that reflect how their experience may be if they choose to work with you. Choose a comfortable sitting or standing position and act like yourself on your best day.

Include your spouse/children/pets… unless you’re some sort of husband and wife team that caters to millionaire tweens and their pampered pooches. Then by all means!

So there you have it: our take on taking really good real estate headshots. Keep in mind that there is an exception to every rule. If you have positioned yourself in a niche market, you may find a reason to do every don’t and avoid every do. The most important thing to remember is that your headshot is often your first impression – make it count.
